Designed for the collection of one unit of whole blood and separation into two different blood components: plasma and red cells, obtained by way of centrifugation and extraction. The primary bag contains CPDA-1 anticoagulant solution. Packed red blood cells, also known as packed cells, are red blood cells that have been separated for blood transfusion. The packed cells are typically used in anaemia, that is either causing symptoms or when the haemoglobin is less than usually 70–80g/l (7–8 g/dl).
Anticoagulant ingredients in CPDA1 have following functions:
Citrate: acts as an anticoagulant by chelating calcium.
Dextrose: needed for metabolism of stored red blood cells.
Phosphate: maintains an alkaline pH and helps to maintain 2,3 DPG levels.
Adenine: improves the viability of red blood cells, thus providing a longer shelf-life.
Blood collected in a double blood bag can be stored up to 35 days under 2-6°C, if it is collected in CPDA1. The double blood bag system consists of a blood donor bag for collection of 450ml blood, donor tube (consists of needle 16G x 1.5” (1.60 x 38mm with needle cover), puncturable and nonsealable transfusion port, Y-type connector tubing, clamp, and additional 350ml dry pack, in a closed sterile system.
An important secondary reason for preferring packed red cells over whole blood, is that the process of packing red cells allows the separation of plasma, which can be frozen for clinical use, or fractionated to make plasma-derived products. Frozen plasma can be stored at below -18°C.
