Filtration of platelet concentrates, and red cell products can be done to remove more than 99% of white cells from blood products, in a process called leucodepletion. Leucodepletion reduces the risk of Cytomegalovirus (CMV) transmission and the risk of other transfusion-related reactions.
Another reason leuco-depleted products are commonly used is to prevent posttransfusion complications is leukodepletion, which is a process by which the white blood cells (WBCs) are intentionally reduced by almost 99.99%.
Red blood cells can be filtered prior to infusion, to remove clots and small clumps of platelets and white blood cells (leukocytes) that form during collection and storage.
Laboratory leukocyte reduction filter for red blood cells is indicated for the depletion of leukocytes in a single unit of red blood cells, collected from a healthy adult at ambient temperature (20-24 ℃) within 8 hours, or refrigerated at (1-6 ℃) no later than 7 days after collection.
